The Swedish international completed a British record transfer to Anfield from Newcastle, amounting to £125M. Isak expressed his desire to leave Newcastle throughout the summer and refused to play for the club, who did not allow him on their preseason tour and made him train alone.
His controversial move shocked many as tensions grew other whether he would stay or not and if he would honour his contract. Isak said there had been broken promises and stated that the trust between him and the club was irreparable as fan frustration grew.
However, despite such a controversial move, Isak has taken to Instagram to describe his time at the club as an honour.
"I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together.
"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years.
"Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle."
With the signings of forwards Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa confirmed for The Magpies, manager Eddie Howe will look to move on from the saga that has surrounded the club for several weeks. Isak’s statement looks to be the end of it for now, but as the season continues the situation may crop up once again in the future.
