The club released a statement saying Neuer was out “for the time being” with a torn muscle fibre in his calf as the legendary goalkeeper prepares for a number of weeks on the sidelines.
Despite this injury, the 39-year-old who turns 40 later this month is still going strong at one of the biggest clubs on the planet.
Neuer’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season, sparking reports about his future. Now, speaking this week, Eberhl has revealed the shot stopper will enter talks as his role at the club is discussed.
"It's about how Manuel feels, whether he wants to and whether he sees himself as capable of delivering his performances for another year. At almost 40, he's still a top goalkeeper in Europe."
“You have to talk about what his motivation and his tension are. We as a club expect that and want to find that out together with him."
"Manuel is not a normal ‘internal transfer’, but he is a legend – and he plays as a goalkeeper in a very decisive position. Our goalkeeper situation is comfortable with Manuel as number 1.
“We are not running after any development, but can speak calmly with all parties involved. And the first person we need to talk to is Manuel."
Neuer has made 27 appearances in all competitions and has kept eight clean sheets under manager Vincent Kompany, who relies on the veteran more than ever as they chase down another Bundesliga title.
Jonas Urbig is likely to step in for Neuer who could return early next month as he rests and recovers.
