Simons racked up 17 goal contributions in 25 Bundesliga matches last season and is arguably one of the best young talents in Europe and despite being named in RB Leipzig's training camp squad for preseason it looks very likely that he will depart the side this summer.
According to journalist Florian Plettenburg, Chelsea are close to agreeing a deal for the Dutch international who would slot into manager Enzo Maresca’s side, ready for the season ahead.
“Chelsea and #Xavi Simons are getting closer, as revealed last night. A verbal agreement is near. Personal terms are not an issue, as Xavi is open to the Chelsea project.
“Very good talks also took place with RB Leipzig yesterday, with more scheduled for today. Now, RB are waiting for an offer. Leipzig are simultaneously working on a deal for Carney Chukwuemeka.”
Talks have been progressing well with his camp and the 22 year old who made the move to the Bundesliga side in January after spending two years on loan there. Simons is a graduate of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy and would be a welcome addition to the Blues who already have so much firepower in midfield.
Leipzig have identified Chelsea's Chukwuemeka as a potential replacement in their midfield in a deal that suits both sides. However, the 21 year old spent last season on loan in Germany with Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig would likely face competition for his signature this summer.
