Coach Maggie Chombo praised her Malawi women's U20 players for their fighting spirit despite missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

The Young Scorchers defeated Nigeria 2-1 in Saturday’s second-leg clash at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, but lost 3-2 on aggregate.

Sweden-based forward Faith Chinzimu scored twice to revive Malawi’s hopes, netting in the ninth and 55th minutes to level the tie.

However, Precious Oscar struck for the Falconets in the 62nd minute to seal the West Africans’ qualification.

“We won the match, but our aim was to qualify and unfortunately, we didn’t make it. I thank the girls for the spirited performance. We have learned a lot, and it was a good campaign,” Chombo was quoted by Malawi Football Association official website.

Nigeria will discover their group-stage opponents for the tournament on Friday, May 15.
