Argentina icon Lionel Messi has revealed his World Cup ambitions as he attempts to be fit enough to star for his country.

Reigning World Cup champions and back-to-back Copa América winners Argentina are preparing for Friday’s friendly against Angola in which Messi should lead the side once more in front of Spanish supporters in the town of Algorfa, near Alicante.

Many have asked whether or not the 38-year-old will make it to the World Cup next year as age slowly catches up to the Inter Miami star. For now he remains part of Lionel Scaloni’s squad for now, but says he does not want to weight the side down.

“I’m excited for the World Cup. But I don't want to be a burden, I want to feel good physically, be sure that I can help and contribute things to the group”.

“I will see day to day if I really feel good physically to be like I would like to be able to participate”.

Argentina have already secured their place in the draw for the 2026 World Cup having topped CONMEBOL qualification by nine points from second placed Ecuador. Their place in the tournament is locked in and yet Messi is reluctant to confirm his place in the side despite him being a main component in the squad.

Messi has already earned 195 caps for his country, scoring 114 goals. He and arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo are set for their final World Cup next year in what would be a fairytale match up that may not happen if Messi pulls out of the side over the next year due to concerns over his fitness.
