England’s Under-17 World Cup campaign ended in dramatic fashion as they were thrashed 4-0 by Austria in the Round of 16.

The turning point came early in the second half when Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez received a red card shortly after the Young Lions had fallen behind, leaving the Three Lions a man down against a dominant Austrian side.

At the Aspire Zone in Qatar, England struggled to cope with Austria’s fluid attacking play, marking the country’s best performance at this age level in the tournament.

Austria opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half, with Hasan Deshiksu weaving past defenders to slot a precise finish past Arsenal goalkeeper Jack Porter.

Rodriguez’s dismissal compounded England’s woes with Johannes Moser converting a penalty in the 70th minute before scoring again shortly after, and defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe sealed the rout in the final moments, tapping in after Porter’s initial save.
