Jon Dahl Tomasson has been sacked as Sweden manager after Monday's shock 1-0 defeat by Kosovo, which leaves their World Cup hopes in tatters.

Sweden have sacked their manager for the first time ever after Tomasson led the side to the bottom of Group B, with one point from four games, despite having a world-class squad on paper.

The defeat to Kosovo was his side's third successive loss and despite Kosovo being ranked 99th in the world, Sweden failed to take their chances and ultimately gave up their chances of going to the World Cup.

Liverpool’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres were not enough firepower to help Sweden drag themselves out of misery and now the national side must find a new head coach in the hopes of booking their place in next year’s tournament.

SvFF chairman Simon Astrom released a statement on the sacking, which did not come as a shock to supporters.

“The decision taken by the Swedish Football Association is based on the fact that the men's national team has not delivered the results we hoped for.

“There is still a chance for a playoff in March, and our responsibility is to ensure that we have the best possible conditions to be able to reach a World Cup final.

“In this regard, we believe that new leadership is required.”

Tomasson had previously managed Dutch clubs Excelsior and Roda JC, Malmo in Sweden, and English side Blackburn. He will now search for a new club as the season ramps up.
