Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes admitted he was baffled as to why three England stars were not in manager Thomas Tuchel's squad.

England are through to next summer's World Cup thanks to a comfortable 5-0 win over Latvia in their latest qualifier, which included a brace from captain Harry Kane.

However, despite qualifying without losing a game under manager Thomas Tuchel, Scholes spoke on The Overlap about how the Three Lions won’t come close to winning the competition without three key players.

"I was a little bit surprised. Those three players, they have to be in his squad, and they will be in his squad for the World Cup. If you look at the squad now, you would say they have virtually no chance of winning the World Cup. Even with those three players, it’s still a big ask, but it gives you more of a chance of winning the cup.

"Jude Bellingham has missed a little bit of football, but he’s fit now so I would have brought him back in. Thomas Tuchel hasn’t got many games left now until the World Cup actually starts, it’s only the November break and then the March one, and then we’re there so we need to get these players playing."

There are two games left to play for Tuchel's team, against Serbia on 13th November at Wembley Stadium and Albania on 16th November in the country's capital, Tirana.

Tuchel will be contemplating his side before next month, which could provide clues as to who will make the plane for next year’s competition. Bellingham, Foden and Jack Grealish must continue to impress in the meantime if they want a spot however in what is a squad brimming with world-class players.
