Neymar has revealed that he could retire later this year after the World Cup finishes.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain stars recurring injuries and lifestyle choices have hurt his consistency and reputation in recent years as he rejoined Brazilian side Santos

Neymar returned to the side in 2024 and his contract is due to expire in 2026 despite reports suggesting that a contract extension has been reached between him and the club.

The 34 year old is still focusing on the World Cup, despite having not represented the Selecao since October 2023 and being much older than the national pool of talent manager Carlo Ancelotti has to choose from.

This has led to questions over his future in the game and the winger has spoken this week on how he may hang up his boots by the end of the current year.

Neymar has told CazeTV: “I don't know what the future holds for me. It's possible that in December I'll want to retire.

“I'm living day by day. This year is crucial, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team and for me.”

"With a lot of training, with a lot of perseverance, which is what moves us, I will be able to reach my 100%. That's what I want, that's what I told them. So I'm living year by year, I don't know what's going to happen from now on, I don't know next year; it may be that December comes and I want to retire, I don't know. It will be what my heart dictates.”

Neymar is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, with 79 goals to his name. He is unlikely to be picked for the side that will travel to the US, Canada and Mexico however as he weight up his future in the twilight of his career.
