The Portugal captain's sustained a muscular problem while playing for Saudi Pro League leaders Al Nassr last month and has since been recovering behind the scenes.
At 41 years old, he has been receiving treatment in Madrid, Spain as he tries to recover before the end of the season but more importantly the World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada this summer.
Now, as confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo has not been included in the squad for Portugal’s upcoming friendlies.
“Cristiano Ronaldo will NOT be part of Portugal squad for friendly games next week as he’s still injured.
“Priority to full recover after discussions between Al Nassr and Portugal backroom staff.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez sent a message to fans, stating that Ronaldo is not at risk of being left out of the World Cup.
"No, he's not in danger," he said when announcing his 27-man squad on Friday. "It's a minor muscle injury, and we think he can be back in a week or two.
"Everything Cristiano has done physically this season shows that he's in great shape."
Ronaldo's in-form Al Nassr teammate João Félix is in the squad and Martinez will not want to rush the former Manchester United star into the squad before he is fully fit once again, with the tournament just months away.
