Hojlund's future is in doubt after the arrival of fellow centre-forward Benjamin Sesko this week from RB Leipzig. The former Atalanta striker has attracted fresh Serie A interest from AC Milan.
However, Brown - who works as a club ambassador and MUTV pundit - says Hojlund's preferred option would be to stay with United.
The former defender travelled with the squad on their Asian preseason tour and told Tribalfootball.com: "If the world of football worked like that, I would, I would definitely keep him.
"I think if you've brought in a new striker and you're playing two up front, I think it's completely different. But probably knowing he won't play, I think he'll find it a little bit difficult.
"He might get one or two opportunities. But obviously, Sesko's been brought to start, to be the main guy. And, you know, even though I still think we need back up there, I really do, he wouldn't play that much. So, listen, it's one of them.
"I'm sure the club, you know, if Hojlund wanted to stay, which I know he does actually, they will try that.
"But listen, if teams come in for him and United probably can get money for him, they will probably go that way. It's as simple as that."
Not a nice game
Brown admits he has sympathy for Hojlund, who's future is now in sharp focus.
"Listen, football's not a nice game, is it? It is. You know, you're in sometimes and sometimes you're out and and it can happen to anyone.
"But obviously Sesko will be the main guy and Rasmus will find it hard to sort of get his position back in that sense because he's going to play the majority of the games."
