This year marks a significant opportunity for Max Allegri. His return to the helm of AC Milan represents not only a comeback but a chance to re-establish himself at the centre of Italian football.

After a brief hiatus and a period where his reputation seemed to fade, Allegri is back, ready to prove he’s far from a coach of the past. Milan has placed its trust in him following a turbulent season, turning to an experienced figure who knows the club, the fans, and what it takes to succeed in the Rossoneri environment. Milan is in rebuild mode, and Allegri, once considered out of favour, is now the man chosen to lead this new cycle.

Linked in recent months with Roma, Napoli, and even a return to Juventus, no club had the conviction to make a decisive move, until Milan did. It was a bold decision, but one rooted in logic: Allegri brings experience, tactical intelligence, and a deep understanding of Italian football. Following his long tenure at Juventus, where he was often more of a manager than a coach in the purest sense, Allegri now has the chance to return to real coaching, shaping a team, crafting tactics, and guiding a new technical project.

In many ways, this is a situation he hasn’t encountered in years. It harks back to his early days at Cagliari, where he made a name for himself with innovative and pragmatic football. Those qualities earned him his first Milan call-up, where he led the club to its last Scudetto in 2011, ending a seven-year drought and, at times, playing beautiful football, helped by the exceptional squad he had at his disposal. His time at Juventus, of course, stands as the pinnacle of his career thus far: five Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia triumphs, two Italian Supercoppa Italiana, and two Champions League final appearances.

Symbol of stability

Though the latter ended in defeat, reaching that stage twice is a remarkable achievement in itself. He returned to Juventus from 2021 to 2024, winning another Coppa Italia amid internal chaos and declining results. Despite the difficulties, Allegri remained a symbol of stability.

After his second spell at Juventus, he was once again linked with several clubs, Roma, Napoli, and others. Ultimately, Milan made the decisive move, perhaps influenced by Conte staying at Napoli and not returning to Juventus. Now, Milan has entrusted Allegri with the keys to a full rebuild. Changes are already underway. Theo Hernandez has been sold, Pervis Estupiñán has arrived, and the club is working on a move for Ardon Jashari, though his price tag is proving a hurdle.

Fans are growing restless. The presence of a high-profile manager like Allegri on the bench has raised expectations, and a sluggish transfer market is starting to test their patience. But it’s worth pausing to recognise Allegri’s journey, not just as a relic of the past, but as one of the greats in Italian football. He’s not a gamble; he’s a proven winner who simply needs the right conditions to succeed again.

Milan board must show support

Of course, Milan must support him with signings, strong, experienced players. Allegri is not typically associated with youth-only projects. A balanced mix of emerging talent, seasoned professionals, and tactical clarity will be crucial. He can bring that clarity. Milan’s identity on the pitch must be reshaped. That’s the task at hand. Previous managers like Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceição failed to leave a lasting impression, not because they were poor coaches, but because Milan lacked cohesion and vision.

And now there is a new sporting director, Igli Tare. One of Allegri’s first tactical ideas involves deploying Rafael Leão as a centre forward. It’s an intriguing proposition, and early feedback suggests he’s pleased with the experiment. This flexibility is one of the reasons Milan chose him, because Allegri knows how to adapt and how to help players evolve.

But the longer the market stalls, the longer it will take for us to witness the new Milan, Allegri’s Milan. The opportunity to return to the forefront of Italian football is in Max Allegri’s hands. And if history tells us anything, it’s that Allegri rarely disappoints.
