Late last night, 39-year-old former central defender of Inter Milan, Cremonese, and SPAL, Nicolas Giani, passed away.

Giani announced his retirement four years ago as a result of an incurable illness, which has now sadly claimed his life before his 40th birthday next month.

Tributes poured in for the former defender, including from Inter Milan:  

“FC Internazionale Milano expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Nicolas Giani, a defender who was part of the Nerazzurri youth sector from 1998 to 2005. The club extends its sincerest sympathies to his family at this time.” 

Spezia added: “Spezia Calcio expresses its condolences for the untimely passing of Nicolas Giani. The Giani family has the thoughts and strong embrace of the entire club.” 

Vicenza: “On behalf of the entire club, our deepest condolences to the entire family.” 

Cremonese wrote simply: “Rest in peace Nicolas.” 

In total, he made 481 professional appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 6 assists and passes away as a Serie A legend.
