Baldini, the current Italy U21 coach, will take charge for the Azzurri's two friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece in June.
He steps up after Rino Gattuso resigned last week following Italy's World Cup qualifying playoff defeat to Bosnia.
FIGC announced today: "The national team will return to action in just under two months, facing Luxembourg on Wednesday, June 3rd (8:45 p.m.) at the Stade de Luxembourg, and on Sunday, June 7th (8:45 p.m.) at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, Crete, for another friendly against Greece.
"Under-21 national team coach Silvio Baldini will lead the Azzurri in both matches, assisted by his staff."
Baldini, 67, is a former coach of Empoli and Palermo among several clubs.
