Fernandes has previously considered a switch to the Saudi Pro League, but rejected a move to the Gulf state last summer despite being offered much higher wages than at United.
The 31-year-old arrived at Old Trafford in January 2020 and has since become a bold captain, leading the side through one of the darkest periods in club history.
However, after over 6 years with the Red Devils, the playmaker may seek a new challenge once the season is over. Speaking to BetGoat, Meulensteen believes this may the case if a top side comes knocking.
“I think he's very connected to United and loyal. I think there might be a case where another team, perhaps in Saudi Arabia, comes knocking with a significant amount of money because we all know the money situation at United.
“He's committed quite some years now to United, and he is possibly their best player for the last six seasons. What he's contributed, even in poor moments for United, he's the one that constantly delivered.
“If you ask me, if a team like Real Madrid or maybe Barcelona would come, he might be tempted to go and say, ‘Listen, I want to experience that.’
“But not for another Premier League team.”
Fans recently voted Fernandes into the best XI of players to represent the club between 2000 and 2025 as they showed love for the Portuguese international who, for now, remains loyal.
Fernandes remains under contract until the summer of 2027, with an option for a further year that United could trigger if interest grows from elsewhere.
