David Moyes’ men had taken a 15th minute lead through Iliman Ndiaye’s before the Swiss star restored parity for the hosts at the Stadium of Light.
While expressing his joy at his personal feat, he feels a bit disappointed that his team could not get all maximum points.
“It’s always nice to score the first one for the new club,” Xhaka told the media.
“Everyone knows I am very happy here and I am trying to give my best. Day-by-day, in every game.
“It’s a shame we didn’t get the three points but I am always happy to help the team.
“It’s good when you score so close to the start of the second half because you have another 45 minutes. With a little bit of luck, we could have scored the second but we were lucky that we didn’t concede the second in the first 25 minutes.
“We’re half-disappointed and half-happy but we take the point and move forward.”
