Liverpool paid a British record fee to sign the German international from Bayer Leverkusen this summer in what will likely be the biggest deal of the transfer window for any side in Europe. Wirtz attracted interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, before he ended up moving to The Reds after being convinced by manager Arne Slot.
When asked about his decision in an interview with Kicker, Wirtz explained that it was no easy to decision to make the move to Merseyside, where Liverpool are aiming to defend their Premier League title.
"Just like five years ago, when I left Cologne for Leverkusen at 16, I was looking for where I could best develop my football skills and where I could become the most successful player. That's why I chose Liverpool – and I haven't regretted it yet."
“On the difficulty of his choice: "I've already looked into both clubs very intensively, and in the end, it wasn't an easy decision. But I made it with 100 per cent conviction, and I'm happy about it.”
On his decision to move to the Premier League which is often argued to be the most difficult league on the planet, he said it was hard to make the switch from the Bundesliga.
"The more difficult step to leave that whole environment (Germany) and go to another country with all the changes. And to a new league with a different style of play.
“I would definitely say that it's a bigger challenge, one I consciously chose to overcome and become a better player."
