Liverpool feel disappointed as Ibrahima Konate will leave Anfield when his contract expires at the end of June.

The Reds have been locked in contract negotiations with the French defender for months, but haven't made a significant breakthrough.

That is why news of Konate leaving Liverpool on Thursday evening was hardly surprising, with transfer guru Ben Jacobs shedding light on the situation.

According to Jacobs, sources close to the club feel "disappointed" by this outcome and one they tried to avoid.

But as there was a "significant gulf" between the club and player over terms, a new deal hasn't been agreed, and Liverpool have decided against an "expensive renewal".

Konate joined the Merseyside giants from RB Leipzig for £36 million in 2021. The 26-year-old has since become an instrumental player in defence, operating alongside Virgil van Dijk and inspiring last year's Premier League title win.

He will now exit Anfield on a free transfer, and it remains to be seen what comes next for him.
