Virgil van Dijk's second-half header was enough to give Liverpool an impressive three points at the Stadium of the Light as the champions slowly catch up to Manchester United and Chelsea.
Sunderland went into the game against Liverpool sitting 11th in the Premier League table on 36 points from 25 matches whilst also being unbeaten at home this season.
However, that record has now been crushed thanks to Liverpool who didn’t have an easy ride. Black Cats striker Brobbey caused a serious threat throughout the game and locked horns with Ibrahima Konate for the majority of the game.
The Liverpool skipper was full of praise for the Dutch teammate who he will fight alongside in this summer’s World Cup.
“If you use him well, he's obviously a very handful. He's strong, he's fit, much fitter than I think he was over the years. And there's so much more to ask from him, and I'm very, very pleased, and I'm happy that he's doing so well for Sunderland.
“Like I said, he's a handful, and 90 per cent of today's challenges Ibrahima had to solve, because he was most of the time with Ibrahima (Konaté).
“Maybe he got fed up with me defending in the national team, but I'm pleased for him, and hopefully he can take that form that he has, because he's in form in my opinion, towards the rest of the season and take it with us to the World Cup. And that's something hopefully he can do.”
The Netherlands open their World Cup campaign with clashes against Japan and Tunisia as Van Dijk and Brobbey attempt to lead their country to glory and put their club differences aside.
