Tottenham midfielder James Maddison has given an injury update as he prepares to return to football.

Maddison is yet to feature for Tottenham this season after his ACL injury in the summer in a preseason game against Newcastle United which was a crushing blow for the England star who underwent surgery in August.

The 29-year-old revealed in October that he was targeting a return to action before the end of the season, in a promising sign that his rehabilitation was going as planned.

When asked about his injury, Maddison gave a lengthy but positive update to Sky Sports: “Yeah, I’m doing really well for the stage I’m at. It’s obviously a long injury, which I’ve got and had big knee surgery. It’s about more than anything right now, about staying in the right mindset. I’ve had to accept and get over the fact that I’m going to be out for a long time.

“It destroyed me on the inside. It was such a big season for me with a new manager coming in and in a World Cup year for England. It just felt like I really wanted to have a massive season for myself at this point in my career, but that wasn’t the journey that was lined up for me. “

"I’ve dealt with this, and I’ve dealt with bad things in the past, and this is one of them. I’ve tried to do a few different things in my time-out by starting a YouTube channel and starting the ball rolling on my coaching badges. My partner and I have had another set of twins, so there’s lots going on in my life to try and keep my mind in a good place, and also watching a lot of football.”

Maddison appeared alongside Jamie Carragher for Sky’s coverage of Wolves vs Manchester United and has been tipped to take up punditry after he hangs up his boots.

ACL injuries typically come with a nine-month recovery timeline so he may appear on-screen a lot more until around May when he could return.
