He said, “The belief is there. I think we showed that. The character from this team is amazing and I will never doubt that and hopefully we can keep going like this.

“The season is so long, when you look at the schedule it looks like a tough beginning - it was a tough beginning - but it does not look like it will be easy now.

“It’s going to be tough, the games will still be tough. Last year we dropped points and lost to West Ham at home so next week will not be easy.

“If you want to win the Premier League, you know it’s going to be a long season. You have to stay close at the top - and not just close for this week. Next week it’s the same thing - and we have to keep going.”

Belief and momentum growing

Timber added, "This season is not going to be easy, this game was not easy, and you have to show character and belief and keep going until the end.

“We did that and we need to keep doing it. First, the Champions League and then West Ham. Maybe we will look back at the end of this season and realise that this game was very important for us.

“But just believing that helps a lot. You never know how a game will go and this was tough but we did it in the end. Since I’ve been at Arsenal, I don’t think we’ve ever won at Newcastle. it’s really difficult and yet we never panicked.

“I find it hard to compare seasons, last season was different, different players, different moments, different momentum and so I find it hard to compare and I’m just so happy that we did it.”
