Tottenham midfielder Xavi Simons has apologised for his red card in Saturday's home defeat to Liverpool.

Simons was sent off after clattering into the back of Reds captain Virgil van Dijk halfway through the first-half.

He has since taken to social media to apologise for his actions.

Simons posted: "Errors happen. Van Dijk is my captain (for Holland). I would never consciously hurt him or others.

"To my Spurs teammates, my coach and the fans. I take responsibility.

"I'm really sorry."

Defeat to Liverpool has left Spurs sitting 13th on the Premier League table.
