Germany suffered a surprise defeat away to Slovakia in their opening World Cup qualifier in Bratislava in what was only the fourth World Cup qualifier Germany have ever lost in their history.
Ahead of the game, Schweinsteiger gave his opinion on Germany’s goalkeeper crisis, which has come after Marc-André ter Stegen picked up a back injury which has raised questions for manager Julian Nagelsmann.
Speaking to ARD, he revealed that Neuer would be the perfect fit for Germany given his vast experience.
"When it comes to this topic, I always look around the world to see who has a German passport," he said. "And then I end up with Manuel Neuer. He recently demonstrated his exceptional performance at the Club World Cup.
“I would bring Manuel Neuer back, he has that certain aura. Once you've been a World Cup champion, you want to experience that feeling again. To have the chance to experience it a second and a third time."
Neuer was voted as the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup Man of the Match earlier this month as he continues to prove that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level. Nagelsmann has stated that a fully fit and match-experienced Ter Stegen remains his first choice but Neuer could be the one to lead Germany at the World Cup next year if he does not recover in time.
