Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has defended Florian Wirtz and his start at the club.

The £116M summer signing put in arguably his best display in Wednesday 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt as he picked up two assists for The Reds who stormed to victory.

The former Bayer Leverkusen ace had been under intense scrutiny since making the move from Bayer Leverkusen and has been used as a scapegoat for the club’s successive losses in the past month which had put a dent in their title chances.

Robertson defend Wirtz's performances

After so much criticism, teammate Robertson has jumped to his defence and stated that fans often focus on statistics rather than the impact Wirtz has had so far.

"I thought he was outstanding, excellent. I thought he grew and grew into the game, especially the second half. Players around him helped him a lot – Curtis Jones was outstanding – and I thought the three midfielders helped us gain the momentum and keep the ball.

“Flo has been really good since he came here. People focus on numbers of goals and assists but at times it's unfair as he's created a hell of a lot of chances and on Wednesday some of the chances he created ended up as an assist.

“Hopefully he can take a lot from this performance."

Wirtz hopes to bring more to the side

Wirtz spoke after the win against Frankfurt and revealed that he hopes he can show more of his ability from now on as fans catch on to why the club made a record-breaking bid for him.

“I know that I can do much, much more. I think the second half was really good, and from everyone else too.

“So I’m satisfied that we’ve won today and that I finally have a goal involvement.”
