Fernandes rescued United with a 97th-minute penalty to break Burnley’s hearts at Old Trafford in what was a disappointing 3-2 win over the newly promoted side. It was a win that Amorim needed, in what was just his eighth in 30 league games.
The Portuguese international is often the hero for United despite his many critics and as Amorim works out his awkward midfield it looks like he may have another in Scholes who questioned his role in the middle of the park.
“I think a lot of good teams have the midfield sorted…” Scholes said.
“There’s too much indecision in the midfield area, you think of Casemiro – he’s been a brilliant player, but we know his deficiencies, don’t we?
“Fernandes (and Casemiro), they’re the two he’s going with, and Fernandes for me, he’s someone who fills in as a midfielder – he might get away with it for one, two or three games.
“He’s not got the discipline to be a central midfield player.”
United suffered a setback when new £62.5M signing Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount suffered injuries in the first half of the affair and now Amorim will have to find a work around that may include Kobbie Mainoo who may have the discipline that Fernandes does not have to feature as a central midfield player.
