Milner has decided to hang his boots up at the age of 40 in what was an emotional goodbye to his playing career on Monday.
He brings an end to his playing days with an unparalleled 658 games in England’s top flight, surpassing Gareth Barry’s previous benchmark by five and establishing himself as a club legend.
The iconic midfielder played for Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Leeds, Brighton and Liverpool throughout a career that will leave him in the memory of fans forever.
Speaking to talkSPORT, McCoist revealed that Milner should consider coaching as he was asked if it would be a good idea for him to join Liverpool’s backroom team.
“I don't think it'll be a good idea. I think it'll be a brilliant idea. Guys that hang about for a long, long time and and and the key to their success is obviously talent and an ability to graft and work hard and appreciate their job.
“But also to pass on if you've got talent like that and an experience like that. You don't want to waste that yet.
“You can't buy what Milner and (Jordan) Henderson and boys like that have. They've played it.
“Be where they are and appreciate their surroundings. If you've got somebody like Milner who's just retired and effectively anybody, and I don't know James Milner, but anybody that you speak to or you read about that has played with him or been involved with him or coached him or manager has nothing but good things to say.
“So why would you not have somebody like that about your dressing room?”
Milner scored 56 goals across his various clubs and registered an impressive 90 assists, placing him 10th on the all-time Premier League assist chart. What's next for him is unknown, but coaching may be on his mind ahead of the new season.
