The boxing promoter and former owner of Almeria and Pyramids FC has declared this week that United's owners are in talks about bringing in a new investor.
The Mirror says Saudi government chief Al-Sheikh's post has surprised United insiders and staff, with no internal discussions about a club sale.
United is owned by majority shareholders, the Glazer family, and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos.
However, Al-Sheikh has insisted a sale could now be close to being completed as he posted: "The best news I heard today is that Manchester United is now in an advanced stage of completing a deal to sell to a new investor. I hope he's better than the previous owners."
