Ratcliffe stated that the "UK has been colonised by immigrants" which sparked controversy and conversation amongst many fans and political debaters online.
After widespread political backlash, Ratcliffe said in a statement on Thursday: “I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe.”
Reform leader Nigel Farage dismissed calls for Ratcliffe to apologise over his claims in comments that have gone viral this week.
The club respond
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Kick it Out condemned Ratcliffe’s comments which has prompted a statement from Manchester United on Thursday afternoon.
The lengthy statement touches on the work the club are doing to unite supporters from all background:
“Our diverse group of players, staff and global community of supporters, reflect the history and heritage of Manchester; a city that anyone can call home.
“Since launching All Red All Equal in 2016, we have embedded equality, diversity and inclusion into everything we do.
“We remain deeply committed to the principles and spirit of that campaign. They are reflected in our policies but also in our culture and are reinforced by our holding of the Premier League's Advanced Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Standard.”
Man Utd are proud to represent the city
The statement finishes by focusing upon the diversity of Manchester itself and how the club are proud to represent the city.
“Manchester United reflects the unity and resilience of all the communities we are so privileged to represent.
“We will continue to represent our people, our city and our fans with purpose and pride.”
The Manchester United Supporters Trust also spoke on Ratcliffe's claims, stating: “Comments from the club’s senior leadership should make inclusion easier, not harder.”
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, described the comments as “inaccurate, insulting, inflammatory”.
