United sacked Amorim as manager, bringing an end to his chaotic 14-month reign, which included a Europa League final loss and the club’s worst ever Premier League season.
Fletcher has been brought in on an interim basis and will take charge of the team for their next game against Burnley on Wednesday but it has been reported that he will not stay for the whole season.
As reported by the BBC, the Red Devils are seeking to bring in an interim manager to replace Fletcher until the end of the campaign in what is a shock move.
“A significant update to bring to you.
“We're hearing that Manchester United hope to appoint a caretaker for the rest of the season, and that person won't be Darren Fletcher, who is taking charge of their next match against Burnley on Wednesday.
“United are planning to appoint a permanent manager in the summer.”
The likes of Gareth Southgate and Enzo Maresca among the favourites to take over at Old Trafford, but it looks like whoever is brought in won’t stay long as United weigh up their options before the end of the season.
United have not won the Premier League since 2013, in Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge. Constant managerial changes will not help their title hopes and managers will be weary of taking a role which looks to be cursed at the moment.
