The 37-year-old could face up to 30 days in prison unless he pays the £142K he reportedly owes in a decision that was taken earlier this month by a family court judge in the retired footballer’s southern Brazilian home city of Porto Alegre.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Anderson, a four time Premier League winner, “will be confined to his cell and closely supervised under a tough 'closed regime' if there is space for him in local jails unless he makes an eleventh-hour payment.”
Anderson has not made an official comment so far in what is a shocking turn of events for the former midfielder, who retired at just 31 years old. The Brazil star earned eight caps for his country and made his debut for Brazil came during the 2007 Copa America, which his nation went on to win.
This is a developing story and a statement could come from the former playmaker over the next few weeks as he prepares to enter the prison system in what has been a swift downfall after leaving United for Brazilian club Sport Club Internacional on a free transfer during the 2014-15 season after falling out of favour.
