Casemiro has announced he will depart United upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season in what will be an emotional farewell for the midfielder who is much loved by supporters.
As the 33-year-old prepares to leave, reports have linked the club with the likes of Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson who could slide in to take Casemiro’s role.
Now, as reported by Football Italia and The Touchline, the Premier League side are interested in Juventus playmaker Locatelli who could be the perfect replacement.
The Juventus captain, who received another standing ovation when he was subbed off in the dying minutes in the clash against Napoli last month, is said to be at the top of United’s transfer list.
Locatelli has thrived under coach Luciano Spalletti since he arrived in September and may have to be convinced to join a side who may not secure European football this season.
The 28-year-old has grabbed one goal and one assist in 31 appearances across all competitions this season, and may be a straight swap for Casemiro in that defensive midfield role under the new permanent head coach next season.
During his time in Turin, the midfielder has made 213 appearances, scoring 7 goals and providing 16 assist and United will be keeping a close eye on his progress for the second half of the season.
