United were reluctant to pay Brentford’s asking price for Mbeumo, 26, but ultimately struck a deal worth a reported £70 million, including add-ons.
According to a report from The Telegraph, Ruben Amorim’s side had identified Bournemouth ace Semenyo as a potential alternative should they fail to get the Mbeumo deal over the line.
The report adds that United had a £50 million offer turned down by the Cherries, with Tottenham also keen on signing over the summer.
Mbeumo has since established himself as a key player for United, while Semenyo has nine goal involvements across his nine league games so far this season.
