Premier League icon Gary Lineker has suggested England boss Thomas Tuchel has something against Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The former Liverpool defender was overlooked for the expanded 35-man squad for last night’s draw with Uruguay and Tuesday’s friendly against Japan in what came as a shock decision.

England will face Japan on Tuesday night in their final warm-up fixture on home soil before the tournament begins in North America this summer where Alexander-Arnold has very little chance at making the squad.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker suggested that Tuchel may have something personal against the 27-year-old who has not been at his best since moving to Spain.

"You obviously know I’m a big admirer of Trent," Lineker said. "I think there’s something personal, because football-wise, there’s no argument. I can’t see how he can not be in that squad because he has to improve your chances, even if it’s from the bench.

"So I suspect there’s something that Tuchel does not like about Trent Alexander-Arnold, I’d just be guessing in terms of what it might be, whether it’s his attitude or he thinks he’s not brilliant defensively.

“There has to be something in that because it makes absolutely no sense. You’ve got players playing in his position, with all due respect, that are not in the same league as him, certainly with the ball at his feet."

Tuchel started with Tino Livramento at right-back on Friday night and also has Arsenal’s Ben White and Chelsea’s Reece James to choose from when the tournament starts as Alexander-Arnold watches from the sidelines.
