Chelsea striker Liam Delap was very close to joining Manchester United before he opted to sign for The Blues this summer.

Delap revealed earlier this season that he chose to join Chelsea this summer because of his desire to win trophies, something which United have a low chances of doing this season.

“I wanted to come here to win trophies. When I spoke to the club, everyone wanted to get back to the very top, and they have the quality and the players to do that.

“The hunger and desire to keep adding trophies, to take the club back to where it belongs, that is the main objective.”

However, despite his desire, the Daily Mail report that his move to The Red Devils “was 90 per cent done before the Chelsea swooped in and secured his signature” in what will be heartbreaking news for many United supporters.

Due to Delap’s £30M release clause, he was wanted by a large handful of clubs who met the fee but ultimately missed out to Chelsea who lifted the Club World Cup in the summer.

United forked out £74M to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig as a fitting replacement for Delap. He has made eight appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals, which is two more than Delap so far this season due to him picking up a severe injury.
