Walker, who made 96 caps for the Three Lions, announced his England retirement just months before the World Cup on Tuesday in what was a shock announcement.

The 35-year-old’s final appearance coming in the game against Senegal in Nottingham last summer and his 14-year spell with the England national side now comes to a close.

Walker said that “Representing your country is the biggest thing you can do in football and those memories with England will stay with me forever” but that it was time “to step away for the next generation”.

Speaking on Wednesday, Kane sent a message to Walker alongside pictures of the two celebrating together on a number of occasions.

"It’s been an absolute pleasure to share the pitch with you for so many years @kylewalker2!!

“We’ve made so many incredible memories along the way that I will never forget!

“I’m proud to call you my teammate! All the best with your international retirement mate, and thank you for everything you gave to your country."

Tino Livramento and Djed Spence are also hoping to secure a place in the England squad now that Walker has retired as the next generation steps up for the 2026 World Cup.
