Maddison was carried off on a stretcher with what Thomas Frank said was a “bad” knee injury on Sunday as Spurs beat Newcastle United 1-0. Maddison immediately put his head in his hands, was visibly distressed and left the stadium on crutches, which was a sign that he would not see the club’s first game against newly promoted Burnley.
Now, things have gone from bad to worse for the North London club as the BBC have revealed that Maddison is set to have surgery and will be out for 6 to 7 months which means he won’t return until after Christmas. Maddison had only just returned from a knee injury sustained in May and, after barely 30 minutes of action in pre-season in what is a devastating blow.
Maddison’s injury highlights the the failed move for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White and their ongoing chase for Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze who could be a straight replacement for Maddison due to his versatility.
According to the Sun, Eberechi Eze has not ruled out staying at Crystal Palace despite strong interest from Arsenal and Tottenham who should make a bid for the England international in the coming weeks. One thing for certain is that Spurs must replace Maddison as they cannot enter the season without a player such as him in midfield.
