Tuesday's midweek clash at St James' Park pits Newcastle against Tottenham, who are separated only by goal difference in the middle of the table.
The Magpies coped without Pope against Everton at the weekend as the visitors ended a seven-month wait to win an away league game at the weekend. However, as they prepare to face Spurs, former Arsenal star Ramsdale looks to start between the sticks.
How serious is Pope's injury?
Speaking ahead of the game, Howe has revealed more on Pope’s injury, which he picked up during a training drill.
"We are disappointed to lose him (Pope). We can't afford to lose any player.
"He suffered an injury just towards the end of training. I did not name the team until yesterday.
"So we were just training as normal, he was wrong-footed on a shot and felt something in his groin, more after training than in that moment, and we hope he is not out for long.
"We need him back. He will have a scan in the next few days to find the damage."
Could Ramsdale stake his claim in the side?
Ramsdale has had to be patient for his chance under Howe since joining Newcastle on loan from Southampton last summer. Now, it seems like this may his chance to prove his worth as Howe explained how he could make an impact on Tuesday night.
Nick and Aaron are very different goalkeepers. They have very different strengths.
"They are still very effective. Aaron showed the qualities with his feet today and distributed the ball very well.
"He was not overly worked in terms of shots. What he did have he handled it well.
"I don't think he could have done much with the goal. It is a good day for him and the back four in front of him, a good day for the team in general."
