The No.8 received a straight red card for the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity in stoppage time of the Reds' 2-1 defeat by City at Anfield.
Szoboszlai, who had earlier opened the scoring against City, will serve a one-match ban in the Premier League when Liverpool visit the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night.
Sunday's defeat leaves Liverpool sitting in sixth place on the Premier League table.
