Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has opened up on defender Rico Lewis who may have a future at the club.

Lewis has been the subject of interest from Forest who have already signed the likes of Igor Jesus, Jair Cunha, Angus Gunn, Dan Ndoye, Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee this summer. The young defender claimed an assist during a 4-0 win over Wolves on Saturday, which will only boost his price further as his future is questioned.

City had made extending Lewis’ stay a clear priority earlier this summer but progress stalled, which only led to reports suggesting that he would leave the side once the window opened. Reports suggest that Forest are now willing to double his wages if he does sign, which could entice the England international.

However, Guardiola has spoken out about the 20-year-old and revealed that he is likely to stay despite interest from elsewhere and his issues with the defender’s height, which has often been a talking point due to how small he is.

"I think he’s going to stay, I think. He told me that. But, I said, maybe tomorrow, after tomorrow, it’ll change.

“The case from Phil (Foden), or from Rico, or from Nico O’Reilly, I have a special sympathy because they were 16 or 17 years old when (they) arrived here (in the first-team) and started to win Premier Leagues.

"And his (Lewis’) role, when he plays his role, Rico is an extraordinary player. The only problem I have is he’s so small. If he was taller, I would say, 'Oh, what a player'. It’s that. Today, today, I think he’s going to stay, but I don’t know what’s going to happen."

Guardiola will hope Lewis continues his development within the squad, but he may be tempted if a huge offer does come in from the likes of Forest who are clearly eager to snap up Lewis who would provide depth and flexibility.
