The Premier League's key match incidents panel believe Gabriel should have been sent off for his attempted headbutt on Erling Haaland.

Haaland had already had his undershirt ripped in one tussle with the Arsenal defender during City's 2-1 win on Sunday before late into the game the two players literally went head-to-head.

Gabriel leant his head into the striker, but escaped a sending off as both players were booked by referee Anthony Taylor.

Neither the referee Anthony Taylor nor VAR deemed the incident worthy of a red card whilst John Brooks, deemed that the headbutt was not "not excessively aggressive or violent” so did not intervene.

This was a controversial decision that was discussed by the Premier League's key match incidents panel who voted 3:2 this week in favour of a red card as they stated that "the extra head movement forward from Gabriel" was enough to warrant a sending off.

Gabriel would have been suspended for three matches if he had been sent off for violent conduct and his absence could have destroyed Arsenal’s chances at winning the title and in the Champions League.

City are three points behind Arsenal with a game in hand, a distance that could have been cut down if Gabriel had been punished by VAR during the clash.

Haaland was asked after the game about the incident with Gabriel and why he believes a red card should have been shown to the Arsenal defender.

"I think that is a red card, most of you agree with me on this. If I go down, it’s a red card. I would never do this,” Haaland told Sky Sports.

"Maybe yes, I should have gone down, maybe it would be easier, but I didn’t and I got a yellow card for it."
