Carrick, 44, returned to Old Trafford in January following Ruben Amorim's sacking, and he's since worked wonders in charge.
The Englishman has rejuvenated a squad that lacked confidence under Amorim to win 10 of his 15 matches in the dugout, resulting in Champions League qualification.
The players have also spoken publicly about how much they enjoy playing under him, with Bryan Mbeumo revealing how he wants Carrick to "stay" at the club.
Sky Sports have now said that United are "ready to open talks" with Carrick ahead of the final game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion on May 24.
The report also claims that "United's bosses have not completely ruled out the possibility of someone else taking charge for next season", though Carrick is the one they want to speak to first.
That is because they've been "impressed" by four variables, including his popularity with the playing squad, his handling of the media, his inherent understanding of the heritage and size of the football club, but also, crucially, the results he has achieved on the pitch.
Talks are expected to begin within days, and that news will be music to many supporters' ears.
