Former Premier League forward Ramadan Sobhi has been sentenced to one year in prison after he was found to have committed academic fraud.

The former Stoke City and Huddersfield winger, once dubbed the "Egyptian Messi" during his youth career, currently plays for Pyramids FC, with whom he claimed the CAF Champions League title last season.

Now, as reported by the Daily Mail and The Sun, he has been sentenced to one year in prison with hard labour over the case of exam fraud in which he and three others were accused.

In November, he was handed a four-year playing ban from the Court of Arbitration for Sport after receiving an anti-doping violation.

Sobhi’s lawyer has yet to comment on the verdict which sees, as reported by the Daily Mail, a second defendant in the case was handed a sentence of one year with labour, a third individual acquitted, while a fourth, who is a fugitive, received a 10-year sentence in absentia.

When the allegations first cropped up, Sobhi issued a statement to Egyptian media denying all speculation.

"I have no knowledge of these certificates or records," he declared, adding: "I have never seen them, and I am still a third-year student."
