Williams is now at Hull City as he tries to start a new chapter, having signed on a one-year contract after being out of the game for 20 months, a period in where he was sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended for two years due to dangerous driving.
However, despite planning a resurgence in the Championship, the 25-year-old has made just one appearance in the Championship in what was a five-minute performance in the second game against Blackburn Rovers.
Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic was asked this week what the plans are for Williams, who he revealed has picked up yet another injury as he awaits scans.
"He felt yesterday his calf a little bit sore, he will go on an MRI and so we are awaiting news.
"Also we made one plan for him, six weeks plan, so he has the rhythm of the game so he played for the U21s and together with the club now we will decide what we will do with him in January - he will stay with us, he will fight for his place or he will continue forward maybe to change the club. But, we will see, this is also a question for all of the club.
"Right now, in those games (for the U21s), he showed something but I don’t know if this is enough for Championship. This is something that I need to decide for the January window - he will stay or he will change."
Williams played 51 games for United after coming through the ranks at Old Trafford, with most of his appearances coming under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The defender needs to get back to full fitness as soon as possible if he is to succeed at Hull or face being let go once more.
