FC Koln board member Lionel Souque has revealed how Brighton owner Tony Bloom tried to set up deal for Said El Mala through him.

Brighton offered €15m for El Mala over the summer - which saw Koln sports chief Thomas Kessler turning it down.

However, Bloom refused to take no for an answer, as Souque revealed this past.

He said on the OMR Podcast: "Through a friend at the carnival, the club owner got my mobile number. He was trying to see if he had a chance through me. I told him you are a poker player talking to a fruit vendor.

"There is no way negotiations between us will work. He didn't think it was very funny."

Souque was also clear about who makes the decisions at the club.

"I told him that it is Thomas Kessler who makes the decisions, not me. And I strongly assume that the club will focus on keeping such a good player. There is no chance."

Brighton are expected to make another attempt during the January window, which means that the issue is not yet completely closed.

At the same time, Koln emphasises that the club is not under pressure to sell.

"I hold Said El Mala very, very highly and would do everything to keep him here longer. He can always leave later if he wants. At the moment he feels very comfortable in Koln," added Souque.

The club's chief exec Philipp Türoff also stated: "The player has our full support and we may need to reassess the situation in the future when the time is right. But Cologne has now established a position where we have more financial room for manoeuvre than before. We are not dependent on certain transfer revenues for our survival."
