Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke to the media as he prepares to take on Sunderland this Sunday.

Villa have failed to score a single goal in the top flight so far this season and Emery will be praying that his side can end such a dire streak of goalless games against The Black Cats who have had a very strong start to the season.

Emery's Netflix binge

Emery first spoke on Sunderland and how he caught up with their history with their Netflix documentary series: Sunderland 'Til I Die.

“Difficult. They are excited, motivated. I watched the chapters in Netflix about recently the history they had.

“It is fantastic how they are reacting, after they were in League One, Championship and again Premier League.

“They are so, so motivated, how they achieved it last year.”

Villa must be more clinical

He then opened up on his team’s lack of goals and revealed that Villa must be more clinical as his side have not been good enough.

“We are going to play there in the same form, and mentally we played the last two matches – Everton and Brentford – focused on each match and thinking how we need to feel strong. The commitment the players showed, I think, is the first step forward we did.

“And now we have to do one thing more, (it) is (to) try to be more clinical with the ball in our attacks better than we did.

“Of course, we scored the first goal against Brentford on Tuesday, but it was not enough because we didn’t win, but it is the way we are working and focusing.”

Rogers must overcome his bad form

Midfielder Morgan Rogers has been underwhelming so far this season under Emery who blames some of his poor form on how badly Villa are doing overall since the start of the campaign.

“Every player (has) to work and to feel important in the squad.

“Morgan Rogers, how he’s progressing, how he did his progression here, really is fantastic, and still the same challenge he has.

“He has this challenge, to continue improving and keeping the level he had last year.

“Of course, we started as a team (worse) than we did last year, and we started individually as well (worse) than last year.

“We have to, everybody, try to react, and Sunday is the first opportunity we have.”

Do villa have the confidence needed to score goals?

Finally, he commented on the confidence needed to score goals, something that his side seem to be lacking as they prepare for their fifth game.

“The confidence is something you have to create every day, and creating every day, working, is (the) first step to build it.

“And then when you are playing matches, of course, when you are winning, the confidence is coming better than not.

“But for me, the confidence (is) something, winning and losing, we have to build every day.”
