Liverpool manager Arne Slot says Ekitike's injury "looks really bad" after he was taken off on a stretcher during Tuesday's Champions League loss to the French champions.
Ekitike’s teammate Ibrahima Konate also commented on the injury, which reports suggest is more serious than first thought.
“I am very sad for him, and I hope he will come back. I think it's bad. I don't know. I heard many things.
“With the World Cup, all the things coming this summer, it's very hard for him at this moment - and I send him my prayers.”
L’Equipe report that has ruptured his right Achilles tendon which could leave the former Frankfurt star out for up to nine months meaning he will miss the World Cup and the start of next season.
Ekitike has scored 17 goals in 45 games in all competitions and has been Liverpool’s main goalscoring threat under Slot this season despite the club’s struggles.
The 23-year-old started alongside Alexander Isak in attack who recently returned from a long term injury. With Ekitike out, Slot will have to rely on the Swedish star for the final few games of the campaign as they track down Champions League football.
Liverpool are currently fifth in the Premier League with 52 points and face Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium this Sunday where Isak should start in an already toothless attack under Slot.
