Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele collided with Burn in what was a reckless challenge this weekend, leaving the England international needing treatment before being taken off the pitch.
After the game, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe reacted to the injury as he revealed he had been sent straight to hospital.
“Unfortunate for us, we're losing players in one area of the pitch and our back line is stretched. We've got a number of absentees and so to lose another one in the colossal presence that Dan is, was a big one today.
“I don't know quite how serious it is. It looks like a rib problem. He's gone to hospital to get them checked. But that was a big blow for us because Dan's been an ever-present player.”
Now, Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has reported that Burn’s injury will le will leave him on the sidelines for a number of weeks.
“The word overnight was Dan Burn has a rib fracture. That usually means a few weeks out. NUFC down to 4 fit senior defenders as it stands.”
The good news for Howe is that Sven Botman could return from a back issue against Chelsea next weekend as he seeks to replace Burn as soon as possible.
