Experienced midfielder Casemiro is set to leave the club should a new contract not be agreed by the summer, which opens a door for a new signing under manager Ruben Amorim who will be keen to bring fresh blood into his side.
Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Conor Gallagher of Atletico Madrid have all been linked so far, but it is Gomes who has caught the eye of Cunha.
The Brazilian has spoken on the Wolves star, who he believes has what it takes to thrive under Amorim.
"Maybe Casemiro. He is a bit older now, but I put Casemiro's name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive.
"I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble, and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that. He is unbelievable on the pitch.
"I feel very secure. I feel like I can lose the ball when I have my midfielders behind me. He played very well for the national team, too."
If Wolves are relegated from the Premier League this season, Gomes will be available for a cut-price fee. It's believed Gomes could set United back around £44M, but that price may drop if Wolves suddenly find themselves in the Championship.
"Liverpool is a team I would play for," Gomes told ESPN Brazil in the past "I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football."
