The 18-year-old midfielder, who made his Premier League debut last week, has penned a new deal with the Black Cats until 2030 after an extraordinary rise through the club’s youth system which has led him to become a key player under manager Regis Le Bris.
Still only 18, he has already racked up 74 senior appearances in red and white and spoke to the club website about how happy he is to commit his future to a club who look at home in the Premier League.
“I think this is the best club for me to continue developing,” he said.
“Everyone here has full faith in me, and I want to repay that faith by showing what I can do.
"The lads could have just put me to one side because I was so young, but instead they helped me grow as a player and as a person. The staff were brilliant too, and now I just want to kick on and gain more experience in the Premier League.”
Rigg also spoke on former Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal star Granit Xhaka and how he could be key to his development at the side who immediately made him captain as soon as he signed for the side.
“It’s amazing to be around someone like Granit. You can see how dedicated he is, and he’s already been a huge influence. For me, to learn from one of the best players in the world is unbelievable and something I’m so grateful for.”
