It’s been a disastrous season for Chelsea with qualification for the Europa League the best they can expect heading into the final game of the season.
Still, there is light at the end of the tunnel, with former Real Madrid manager Alonso, 44, set to take over on July 1st.
Several members of the squad, including Cole Palmer, have expressed their excitement over the appointment.
Speaking after their 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham on Tuesday, young Dutch defender Hato became the latest.
"I think Chelsea made a good decision to get Xabi Alonso. I'm excited, I knew him as a player and watched him growing up at Liverpool and Real Madrid," he said.
"He did very well at Leverkusen too, and they became champions, and he was at Madrid. He's a big name, so I'm very excited.
"I've played in a back three and a back four, for me I don't care about where I want to play. I just want to play."
